40 oz. to Freedom: Sublime PDF Print E-mail

I played the drums on this track which was recorded at Mambo Studio in Long Beach, Ca. We tracked all the drums on this record in one take, so there are a few little hick ups if you listen close enough. Plus, I was a gung-ho 18 year-old when we tracked this record so I was always pushing the limits and trying my hardest to flex when I played. It was my idea to make this song a traditional "one drop" drum pattern song. Brad wanted me to play the pattern like Smoke Two Joints or Badfish but I stood fast and the one drop pattern stayed.

Chica Me Tipo: Sublime PDF Print E-mail

I was very much into jazz fusion when we recorded this record so it seeps out once in a while as it did during the heavy shuffle influenced sections of this song.

Date Rape: Sublime PDF Print E-mail

This was a fun song to play. It has a very active progression which leads to a lot of room for expression on the drums. When we recorded this song I was listening to The Police a lot. The hi hat work I did on this song was very much inspired by Stewart Copeland and the way he addressed playing the hi hat.

Doin' Time: Sublime PDF Print E-mail

I produced this track, which was later re-produced and mixed by David Kahne. I gave Brad a bunch of hip hop tracks that I'd put together using the MPC 3000 I still use today. He picked the track with the Herbie Mann sample, the Cold Blood Thriller drum loop, an SH-101 bass line I threw on and the rest is history.

I always enjoy playing songs that have movement during the progression and Brad had a good tendency write songs like that. The uptempo nature of this song made it fun as well.

Final Debt: Rough Establishment PDF Print E-mail

Rough Establishment was a group that Dangr and I formed around 1996. This was our single to a record that didn't get released. I produced all the material and Dangr manned the pen and mic. I am in the process of compiling the songs from the unreleased record to hopefully release soon.

Frontline: Dubcat/Jack Maness PDF Print E-mail

I was a member of a project called Dubcat in which Opie Ortiz, Jack Maness, Tim Wu from Long Beach Dub Allstars along with Destin Berry and Aaron Owens from Hepcat came together. We also had DJ What?! from The World Famous Beat Junkies on the turntables. This is one of the songs that Dubcat put together.

Kick Down: Long Beach Dub Allstars PDF Print E-mail

Long Beach Dub used to have jam/writing sessions in which we just played whatever came to mind. Eric started playing the hip hop inspired bass line and I commenced to accompanying it with the appropriate drums. I took the track to my then apartment and told Dangr "this is the one". We came up with the concept and wrote the track right there in my apartment in one night.

Life Goes On: Long Beach Dub Allstars PDF Print E-mail

I produced this song for the Long Beach Dub Allstars' Wonders of The World album. I did the track in the same manner I did "Doin' Time". I dug a sample, coupled it with a loop, had Eric Wilson lay down the bass line, Aaron Owens(Hepcat, Dubcat) gave me some guitar chords and Gabrial McNair(No Doubt) laced up a few keyboard parts. I came up with the concept of having the lyricists on the song talk about what was happening in their local areas. I had Tippa Irie from The UK, Ives of Delinquent Habits who had his area perspective, Half Pint giving a Jamaican perspective and Chali Tuna of Jurassic 5 giving his perspective. I wanted the message to be sent that there is resolve to the our issues hence the title "Life Goes On".

Smile and Cry: Jack Maness PDF Print E-mail

I played drums on this track. I was honored to be on this one due to the fact that renowned musician Carol Kaye played bass on the track. Look her up if you're not aware that she has played bass and guitar on thousands of tracks throughout the 60's and 70's.

The Hunt pt. 1: Monsieur Leroc PDF Print E-mail

Monsieur Leroc is a producer from Brooklyn New York. He's a great funk/hip hop producer who has been ahead of his time for a while now. I did a handfull of scratching on his record "Oh la la". I used James Brown "heh huh" for the scratches on this track and did a sorta drum beat rhythm with it.

This is a 90's style "boom bap" track I did for Philly. This style of production is on of my favorites; raw and simple with some grease in it.

Another 40oz to Freedom song. This was a definite smasher at the backyard parties we used to play back in ‘89-'91. One of my favorites!

What Happened: Sublime PDF Print E-mail

It seems like 40oz to Freedom songs were either laid back like "Smoke Two Joints, Slow Ride and Badfish" or uptempo like "Date Rape, Hope" and this one! Two feels/tempos that I truly enjoy playing! Again on this track I was influenced by Stewart Copeland's(The Police) hi hat technique.

What I Got: Sublime PDF Print E-mail

I played the drum loop in this song. Brad and I tracked the drum loop at a makeshift studio/bedroom he set up in a store front on Ohio Street in Long Beach, Ca. We tracked a bunch of drum patterns with a bass drum, snare drum and a pair of hi hat cymbals. We tracked the drums using a Tascam 4-track and two mics. I also played the live drums on this track during the David Kahne produced sessions at Total Access studio in Torrance, Ca. I did the scratches on this song as well.
